● Beneficial (emerging)Betaine, also called trimethylglycine, is a compound derived from glycine that acts biochemically as an osmolyte (helping cells manage hydration) and as a methyl-group donor in transmethylation reactions such as the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. In pet-food contexts it is described as a functional additive that may support cellular osmoregulation and methyl metabolism, and one study in cats with chronic kidney disease reported that a betaine-and-prebiotic renal diet helped maintain body mass. Direct outcome evidence in healthy dogs and cats is still limited and much supporting data comes from other species; consult your vet.Sources: Beynen AC (2024), 'Betaine in dog nutrition' (review) · EFSA FEEDAP Panel, 'Safety and efficacy of betaine anhydrous for food-producing animal species' (PMC7009651) · Reviews / technical notes on betaine as an osmolyte and methyl donor in animal and pet nutritionPosition on the ingredient list suggests a moderate to small inclusion level.
